Hypermiling to Save Gas

Hypermiling to Save Gas

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)  -  As we watch our wallets get thinner as gas prices rise, many people are turning to a concept of driving that gained popularity back in 2006.  Hypermiling was created by Wayne Gerdes, who was working at a nuclear power plant when he decided to study how cars burn less fuel.

WBTV's Jamie Boll and producer Jeffrey Keene put the concept to the test in a minivan.  The car was getting 22 miles per gallon before they put some of Gerdes' ideas into practice, but once they tried his ideas the gas stretched to 31 miles per gallon.  Imagine the savings over the course of a year!

Keep in mind the renegade hypermilers have discussed the concept of  'drafting' but it is considered highly dangerous by most driving instructors and NOT something WBTV would recommend.

The 3,000 mile oil change myth

The 3,000 mile oil change myth

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Many people who have purchased new cars recently may be surprised about some new guidelines for oil changes.

Some auto manufacturers are suggested you stretch out that routine task from every 3,000 miles to every 5,000 miles now, depending on a few different factors.

Brittany Arnold was delighted to hear this, as she usually goes a few thousand miles past 3,000 anyway.

"It's all about money for me.  It's expensive to go every 3,000 miles.  So I put it off as long as I can," Arnold said.

That's fine, mechanics say, for some cars and some drivers.

"If you only drive your vehicle around town, three or four miles every day, sure you do need to change your oil every 3,000 miles," said Jeff York with Fleet Automotive on the west side of Charlotte.

Don't let the cold get your home or car

Don't let the cold get your home or car

SALISBURY - The first really cold snap can cause an even worse cold snap, the kind that causes pipes in your house to burst.

It's a messy and expensive problem, but one that can be easily avoided.

"You will not notice a busted pipe until it does defrost," said Tony McDaniel, a supervisor with Carolina Pipe Cleaning in Salisbury.  "By that time everything under the house is getting wet, possibly ruin air condition ducts, foundation, anything like that."
