Killers hit stage in musical comedy

The Carolinas Actors Studio Theatre is presenting its production of the acclaimed musical Assassins.

Winner of the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Best Rival of a Musical, the Stephen Sondheim musical comedy opens in a fairground shooting gallery where, amid the flashing lights, a collection of misfits is gathered.

The proprietor of the game entices them to play, promising that all of their problems will be solved by killing a president.

Among the crowd is a who's who of assassins and would be assassins, including John Hinckley, Squeaky Fromm, Sara Jane Moore, John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald.

Theater-goers can catch a performance at the Carolinas Actors Studio Theatre, located at 2424 North Davidson Street Suite 113 in Charlotte, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through July 13, at 8 p.m.

Straight from the horse’s mouth, local farms and their animal residents have a very important job when it comes to what ends up on your dinner plate. Dig into the fun of farming when Charlotte Nature Museum hosts its June Creature Feature, Farm Day, Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Whether you’re a kid of the human or goat variety, you probably enjoy munching fruits and nibbling veggies. When these wholesome foods come straight from the fields in your community, not only are you helping local farmers but you’re probably grazing on very fresh food.

The Reedy Creek Nature Center is inviting the public to an indoor gardening class this weekend.

Participants have the opportunity to create a miniature garden from recycled materials and small plants

Gardeners of all ages can join the fun at the Reedy Creek Nature Center, located at 2900 Rocky River Road in Charlotte, Sunday June 16, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m.

The cost is free, and the program is open to the public. Materials are provided.

Annual Rock & Read 5K moved to Plaza Midwood

The Friends of the Library, a component of the new Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation, has announced a new location for its fourth annual Rock & Read 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, September 14.

The group will host the race in Charlotte’s Plaza Midwood neighborhood with a 1-mile Fun Run/Walk and a Kids’ Dash featuring Chubby of the Charlotte Checkers.

The Rock & Read 5K will kick off and finish at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s Plaza Midwood branch.

Participants and spectators will enjoy music at every mile of the race and a festival atmosphere following the event including live music, food and drinks.

”We are excited about a new location for the race this year,” says Ashley Sherry Brown, Race Chair and Friends of the Library Board Member.

16th Annual Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas

The 16th Annual Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas returns to Charlotte on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th in Independence Park.

The Juneteenth Festival is a celebration of not only freedom for enslaved blacks in America, but freedom of all people that have been enslaved throughout time.

The festival will offer a rich array of cultural traditions and diversity through food, arts and music, and offers a broad variety of tantalizing, ethnic foods, plus an even greater selection of vendors displaying unique arts, crafts and clothing from around the world.

Participants can enjoy fabulous R&B, Blues, Jazz, Reggae, Hip-Hop and many more soul-stirring sounds as music and dance groups perform throughout the weekend's festivities.

Admission is free and the festival begins at 10 a.m. and goes until 10 p.m. The Cultural Camp on Thursday begins at 9 a.m.

Actors bring "Proof" to the stage

The Carolinas Acting Studio is presenting its production of David Auburn's Proof this week.

The play follows Catherine, a brilliant but unstable mathematician who spent years caring for her father.

After her father's death, Catherine must deal with the arrival of her estranged sister and the attentions of her father's former student who hopes to find valuable work in the notebooks her father left behind.

With a blooming romance and the discovery of the mysterious notebook, Catherine wonders how much of her father's madness - or genius - that she inherited.

The show contains profanity, so parental guidance is suggested.

Theater-goers can catch the performance at the Carolina Actors Studio Theater, located in Suite 113 at 2424 North Davidson Street in Charlotte, Thursday May 30 through Sunday June 1, at 8 p.m.

A matinee is also available Sunday June 2, at 2:30 p.m.

Admission ranges from $18 to $28.
